Two firefighters from Exeter Airport have raised more than £2,500 for charity after successfully completing the gruelling 100km Gower Peninsula Ultra Challenge in South Wales.
Chris Briggs and Iwan Jones, who serve with Exeter Airport Fire & Rescue Service, took on the two-day endurance event to support Young Lives vs Cancer, a charity that provides vital help to children, young people and their families facing cancer.
The cause was especially personal for Chris, whose sister-in-law, Kaley Fitzsimmons, passed away 10 years ago at the age of just 33 from osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. Her strength and courage inspired the fundraising effort.
Speaking after successfully completing the challenge with Iwan, Chris said: “The Ultra Challenge was tough both physically and mentally, but knowing we were raising money for such an important cause kept us going. Young Lives vs Cancer is a charity that does incredible work, and we’re proud to have played our part in supporting the children, young people, and families they help every day.”
Exeter Airport’s Managing Director Stephen Wiltshire added: “We’re all very proud of Chris and Iwan for completing this tough challenge for such a good cause. It’s inspiring to see colleagues who not only safeguard our airport every day but also go the extra mile to support families facing the toughest of circumstances.”
In total, the firefighters raised £2,575, with all proceeds going directly to Young Lives vs Cancer.
