Faro is a Portuguese City in the Algarve region of Portugal.
Faro is a historic city situated on the southern part of Portugal and its mild winter temperatures and warm summer temperatures reflect its location. During the winter the average temperature during the coldest month is around 8ºC and during the warmest summer month the average temperature is around 29ºC but the temperature can reach in the low 40’sºC and the sea temperature can reach 23ºC so perfect to cool off in.
Faro is placed on the edge of Ria Formosa national park which is a series of saltwater lagoons which attract migratory birds and other wildlife and then there are the three sandbar islands which provide Faro with some of the most unspoilt and least developed beaches in the Algarve. A boat tour can be found in the harbour to take you around the Ria Formosa National park and a ferry service is operated to the sandbar beaches.
Faro like many historic Mediterranean ports has a walled old town that is picturesque and quaint, and the new developed areas cater for the traveller and locals alike with well-developed shopping areas lined with cafes and restaurants.
Faro is slightly off the tourist trail and as such the never feels overcrowded during the summer months and that the traveller can always find a place to stop and relax.
Nearby is the Pink Estoi Palace which is considered by many as the finest example of Rocco Architecture in the Algarve, the grounds are wonderfully maintained and there are also some wonderful Roman sites to visit nearby. There are buses from Faro to Estoi or the traveller can go on a planned day trip.
Faro offers a macabre experience with a trip to the Capela Dos Ossos (the bone chapel) a must. The bones of the overcrowded cemeteries where used to the line the walls of the small chapel.
