In the month when Exeter Airport is setting out on a new Charity-of-the-Year collaboration with Macmillan Cancer Support, the figure for passenger donations in 2008 has been announced at nearly £2,000.
The passengers’ donations of notes, coin and foreign currency collected in strategically-placed counter containers and large coin ‘spinners’, totalled £1,920 for the year. The sum of £1,280 was donated to The Stroke Association, the airport’s chosen charity for 2008. An exception to the one charity per year rule was made for the Poppy Appeal and a record breaking amount of £640 was collected for the Royal British Legion.
Airport spokesman, Stephen Ayres said: “Exeter Airport receives a great many requests for fund-raising donations and sponsorship but adopts just one main charity for the whole year. We were delighted to have played a part in raising a wonderful sum of money for the charities last year and we hope that the travelling public will give generously to the Macmillan Cancer Support in 2009.”
“Statistics show that one in three of the population will get cancer and two million are living with it. By supporting Macmillan the passengers of the airport are helping the charity provide practical, medical, emotional and financial support.”
Judith Jolly the charity’s Area Fundraising Manager, Devon and Cornwall said: “Macmillan Cancer Support is absolutely delighted to be working with Exeter Airport. Not only will we be able to raise Macmillan’s profile with the tens of thousands of travellers who fly in and out of Exeter, but also we hope to raise money from staff and public alike to help those who are affected by cancer.”
